Personality Profile: Prof. Brimmy A.U. Olaghere (One Of The Best Profs In The World)

Prof. Brimmy was born in 1945 in Edo State, Nigeria. He is one of the links between the north and southern parts of Nigeria. His mother is from Gombe state, while his father is from Edo state. He is married with many children; some of them live in Nigeria and some in the United States of America where his wife resides. Prof. Olaghere is an educationist who has travelled round the world. In 1961, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa sent him to Ghana to work with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, where he conducted a research and wrote the strategic plan for establishment of African Development Bank [ADB]. As a co – founder, his work was supervised by both Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Dr. William Edward Burhardt Dobois. After the establishment of ADB, Dr. Nkrumah appointed him as Roving Secretary for Pan African Youth Movement for West Africa Region at Sierra Leone in 1964 and reported directly to him – Nkrumah. While in Sierra Leone, he went back to school to study Electronics and Communications at Freetown Technical Institute for two and half years and graduated with a Diploma.

In 1968, he left Sierra Leone for the United States of America to further his education at George Washington University, University of Maryland College Park Campus and Golden Gate University, where he earned his degrees. He earned three degrees, awarded with nine degrees and many certificates. Prof Brimmy Olaghere spent forty years travelling to more than 167 countries and more than 10,000 cities. Some he revisited more than five times, conducting research studies and strategic planning at his own expense. Prof Brimmy had his PhD in Econometrics and also studied Mathematics, Economics, Financial Account and Banking. He taught in almost 144 universities around the world, teaching and lecturing while travelling. He can teach 22 subjects and 44 courses.

What motivated him into politics was his life experience at a younger age when he started schooling at the age of 16, he was older than all the students in the classroom and was forced to sit behind the classroom window for six months. At that age, he was also a young farmer who knew how to mix with people from different cultural backgrounds. He said…

“I knew what politics is all about being a farmer as well as a business man. Politics and Business are inter-twined, and even though people do separate them, the difference is very minor. Therefore, politics for me began when I started going to school, this means as a politician, you have to know what you want, where you want it, from whom you want it and what you want it for. Then you will be able to set a goal for yourself on how to achieve what you want by using what you have to get what you need. However, politics is getting to a point you want to be and as a politician you must be clear to plan for it to get there. So to me, the only way I can get there as a politician is by comprehending my needs and accepting what I am; are they defining my goals, to achieve those goals? Any obsession that goes in between, I will say no to them! Because in me there is good and in me there is bad, but since I choose the good, I must justify why I choose the good”.

Prof. Brimmy Olaghere was a presidential candidate of Nigeria Peoples Congress Party {NPCP} in the last presidential election held in April, 2007. He joined the race to contribute his best in the nation development and plans he had for Nigeria and Africa as a whole. He planned 100 years master plan for Africa, which is known as ‘ACT 100 YEARS MASTER PLAN’. It was approved and endorsed in 1997 by the Africa Economic Development, African Union and US Government, under President Clinton’s administration. The ‘ACT’ was established upon his request and New African Infrastructural Development Fund was launched with 350 Million dollars and later increased to 3 Billion dollars. ACT plan is to develop Africa as a continent with 21st century technology, for all Africans and African descendants in Diaspora. He originated another idea and draft it as Africa Growth and Opportunity Act [AGOA], which was submitted to US Congress and the Senate for consideration. He lobbied for the passage of the Act both at the Congress and the Senate. AGOA was passed by US Congress and signed into law on May 18th, 2000, by President Clinton. He later expanded AGOA, which was passed and signed into law by President Bush. Prof Brimmy had planned and defined “Zero” for Chinese 75 year’s socioeconomic and industrial development plan which was launched March 1st, 1994. He defined “Zero” as an infinite and non-empty numeral counting number in the universe.

Prof Olaghere said, “The whole world wants me to be with them but safety is the first priority, which is why I came back to Nigeria to fulfill the dream of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah”.

Prof Brimmy Olaghere greatest learning experience is in the different fields he had faced in life and most importantly in the educational perspective all over the world. He introduced a resolution on NYSC in 1972, when he was in the United State of America as Secretary General of Nigerian students. The NYSC resolution was accepted by General Yakubu Gowon and was passed with decree after the civil war.

His hobbies are reading, research, writing and thinking a lot. He listens to inspirational songs with meaning. The person he cherishes most is Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa who was his mentor and who also invested 50 pounds on him and sent him to Ghana to work with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He wants to be remembered as some one who did not come to this world to enrich himself at the expense of others, but to make it a better place for every being.

One of the best Profs in Africa, he his respected all over the world…
