Media Practitioners Encourage Participation of Women In Politics
Nigerian women are being called upon to actively participate in politics because of the significant role they play in the political game.
In an event to mark the International Women’s Day on 8th March, 2018, the Media Women Forum has organised a programme where papers will be presented by different guest speakers with the aim of encouraging more women to actively participate in politics.
The event which is tagged: “Mobilizing Women for Politics” will hold 10:00am on Thursday, March 8 2018, at WFM 91.7 Women Radio Station in Arepo, Ogun State.
According to a press statement issued in Lagos by Janet Mba Afolabi, the Convener, more women should be involved in politics because, “It is no longer only a man’s game.”
The call for increased participation of women in politics particularly in elective positions has been going on since the return to democratic rule in Nigeria.
With the recent 2015 general elections, women’s low participation in elective positions have grown from bad to worse, with a decline from 2007 to 2011 and 2015.
Even before the 2015 general elections, few women emerged as candidates after the political party primaries.
14 females were elected into the House of Representatives and eight women won as senators in the 2015 National Assembly election. Only very few women hold elective positions in the state assemblies.
Government officials, senior media executives, broadcasters, political analysts, women leaders and members of the public are expected to grace the event.
Media Women Forum was established to champion the cause of women, motivate women to be active agents of change in their communities and empower women to live quality lives. It also provides training programs for female journalists within and outside Nigeria. To achieve this, Media Women Forum encourages government and individuals to take positive actions on issues affecting women.
Media Women Forum is largely made up of female media executives who hold decision making positions and seasoned broadcasters who anchor/produce popular Radio and TV shows.
